Tan Weng Sim #Wall-gazing Bodhidharma (Da Mo)
This painting depicts Bodhidharma (Da Mo) stared at a wall for 9 years to seek an answer to life, the universe and everything. It happened inside a cave by a Shaolin Monastery. Bodhidharma stared at the wall without saying a single word for all of those years. After some time, his concentration became so intense that his image was engraved into the stone of the wall before him.
Despite many attempts by his disciple Shen Guang’s request to teach him, Bodhidharma never responded. Instead, Bodhidharma instructed Shen Guang to dig 4 wells on 4 mountains and drink the water from it. The water of the first well was bitter. Following by spicy water on the second well, then sour on the third and sweet on the last. At this point, Shen Guang realized that the four wells represented his life.
Like the wells, his life would sometimes be bitter, sometimes sour, sometimes spicy and sometimes sweet. Each of these phases in his life was equally beautiful and necessary. Without really saying many words to Shen Guang, Bodhidharma had taught him the most important of lessons in a mind-to-mind, heart-to-heart fashion. This mind-to- mind, heart-to-heart communication is called “action language”. It is the foundation of the Chan Buddhism which Bodhidharma began at the Shaolin Temple.
Indeed a powerful painting to remind ourselves that all the bitter and sour moments in life are essential. Once we have tasted all the bitterness, we will eventually taste the sweetness in our life.
Notably, in the mounted process, the artwork is flattened out and laminated to several more sheets of rice paper to make it thicker, yet pliable. Also, a nice silk border is added around the edges of the painting with the addition of a wooden frame. A high quality yet meaningful artwork for your collection.
