Rizacan Kumas #Renaissance of Monks
Visual photographer Rizacan Kumas portrays a unique scene in Myanmar. That is the Buddhist monastic school system which is an old education system with a very long history. These little orphans study in a monk school in Bagan, Myanmar. They live, study, prepare their meals, eat, have bath, play in the playground all together. In addition to religion study, they also embark on social study, maths and science. A basic commune life lived by these little monks is a part of the daily life at school.
On that very special day, they were on a break waiting for their seniors to finish their prayers. Then, they went back o study for the rest of the afternoon. The Buddhist monastic schools helped to give Myanmar a rate of literacy considerably above other East Asian countries in the early 1900s. Nowadays, the monastic schools assist in providing basic education needs of the country. In particular, for children from needy families and orphans. As a result, this fills the significant gap in the education system.
Do you know that the visual photographer also cross the silk road and travel around the world for his photography journey? Read it now!
Generally, Burma monastic schools accept children from needy families who live nearby and are unable to attend government schools. According to Atlas of Humanity, many of the orphans who attend monastery schools in Yangon and Mandalay are from remote areas and have been sent by senior monks from their villages and small towns. Some operate similarly as boarding schools and some as day schools depending on the situation and support of the public. A great initiative in bridging the education and literacy gap indeed.
