Tan Weng Sim #Ji Gong

Ji Gong was a real historical figure. He was with strong, local “crude quality” while highlighting the mysterious supernatural power. In reality, Ji Gong was born to a wealthy family in the early part of the Southern Song Dynasty. As a young man, he joined a Buddhist monastery and took the name, Dao Ji. Unlike most monks, he dressed sloppily in torn rags and even on occasion ate meat and consumed alcohol. This earned him the nickname “Ji the Crazy Monk,” later shortened to “Master Ji” or “Ji Gong”.

Despite his eccentric personality, Ji Gong was sincere and kindhearted. He was known for helping those in need and sometimes even saving their lives. Besides that, Ji Gong possessed supernatural powers that arose due to his spiritual attainments by being a well-accomplished follower of the Buddhist teachings. He would often aid the poor with his abilities and stand up to injustices inflicted upon the downtrodden. Since the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the Legend of Buddhist Ji Gong has been circulating so widely all over the country that almost every household knows the folktale.

One of the most important teachings of Ji Gong is that: one can achieve this view of the ultimate truth through the tantric path. Or through other methods such as the beautiful Zen/Chan tradition of Buddhism. Hence, those of us with the conventional view would perceive a great practitioner’s behaviour as controversial or crazy, since we perceive his actions based on our conventional perception and our limited view. The mahasiddha example and explanation is used not so much as to suggest Ji Gong was a tantric practitioner, but to shed light on the meaning of his controversial actions.
