Ernesto Pujazon #Harmonious Resonance
Throughout centuries, mankind has constantly sought meaning in many elements of nature. Animals in particular are often used to symbolize spiritual powers and omens. Civilizations have been built and led with concepts of spiritual symbolism. In this modern-day and age, spirituality is no longer the unnerving backbones of our moral compass and societal structures. Yet, some of us still find ourselves gravitating back to the very roots of our ancient ancestors.
In this painting by famous artist today Ernesto Pujazon, he depicts four prominent animals that hold significant spiritual symbolism. These four creatures are referred to by a variety of names: “The Four Symbols”, “Four Guardians”, “Four Gods”, “Four Auspicious Beasts”. They all hold the same meaning of being the four mythological creatures that appear among the Chinese constellations along the ecliptic. They are also viewed as the guardians of the four cardinal directions. These creatures are known as the Azure Dragon of the East, Vermillion Bird of the South, White Tiger of the West, and the Black Tortoise of the North. Each of these creatures represent a cardinal direction and colour. They also each represent a season of the year, and one each of the Chinese “five elements”.
The dragon is traditionally believed to be a symbol of potent and auspicious powers. They are often in control over water, hence being able to control the weather for rainfall, typhoons, and floods. In many East Asian cultures, the dragon is also a symbol of power, strength, and good luck. The birth of a White Tiger is extremely rare in both ancient and modern times. Hence the ancient Chinese believed that the birth of a white tiger is an omen of the throne being led by the right man. Only the most virtuous of emperors would be blessed by the birth of a white tiger during his reign. Tigers and dragons are recognized by some as powerful symbols of balance, representing the forces of balance: yin and yang.
It is also believed that the Tortoise is a sacred symbol of longevity, power, and tenacity. The slow-moving creature holds the element of the Earth. The concept of the creation of the universe is often linked to the tortoise, along with its burden of carrying the whole world. In terms of the Vermillion Bird, it is believed to be a phoenix. It is known to be elegant and noble in both appearance and behavior, with feathers in various hues of vermilion. It is extremely particular in regards to what it consumes and where it perches. A symbol of the South and the season of Summer, the Vermillion Bird is believed to represent nobility and elegance.
These Four Symbols within the painting are placed on a chessboard background, with a squared out yin yang symbol in the center. A chessboard is an important symbol of medieval battlegrounds. The yin and yang, symbolize the balance of the realm. All these elements combined create a spiritually powerful piece with profound meaning and impact.
This painting is for the bold, to bring an air of power and impact into a space. Original artworks from senior lecturer of Taylor’s University, Ernesto Pujazon, who is also a famous artist today. View more artworks by the famous artist today Ernesto Pujazon here.
